Where We Began

Life sure is funny, eh? One minute you’re an awkward farm girl, the next a queen. Oh, i’m sure you’ve heard a story similar to this one before, but not one just the same. My name is Niara. Niara Light. Stupid last name, I know. I live in a family of four children, all teenagers. The king of the kingdom just passed on. It’s an upsetting time for all of us. His wife is doing well on her own but his son is going to have to take over duties soon. The kingdom is a nervous wreck. Not a literal wreck, though. Trust me. My family and I decided to pay our respects today. As we approached the palace, my eyes swept the place. My eyes are crystal blue, like my mom’s and my sister’s. Well, that’s not my words. It’s my best friends – she thinks my eyes look like crystals. My sister’s name is Noque. My other sister, and Noque’s twin, is named Narine. My brother is Nye. Narine and Noque aren’t technically my siblings. Half siblings is what they are, in truth. They can be a real handful as well. But I don’t usually mind. My eyes searched the castle as we headed inside. I thought I noticed a strange blur of movement in a window, but I guess I was wrong as no one else had noticed. I shook my head as I heard Nye calling my name.

“Niana. Finally, you look at me. What was going on that you had to stare at the castle for so long?” My eyes bore into his chocolate brown ones but I just shook my head.

“Nothing, nothing. I’m fine, really.” I smiled at him awkwardly. He gave a little nod and we continued walking. I looked to Narine and Noque. Narine was primping her yellowy blonde hair, complaining about how the sunlight reflected off of it. I scoffed at her, as if we had a say in that. She acted as if we were rich, rather than, well, poor. She glared down at her dress. She had hoped to get a brand new one. For a funeral. Narine’s hazel brown eyes were coated in mascara. As if Noque was any better. Noque’s hair was so blonde, it was practically white. Her skinny, aqua eyes are constantly glaring at people. Judging them. She took whatever she wanted whenever she wanted it. On the uncommon days when she spoke words, practically none were released from her lips. She wasn’t that kind of person, I suppose.

Nye was different. He was constantly joking about, messing with my mind. I barely payed attention to his looks. His hair was like my own; shaggy and brown. His eyes were chocolate, like our father’s. He didn’t care about his appearance, but rather, his personality. I wanted to hit him, basically always. But neither of us mind. We enjoy wrestling. I suppose it’s a past time of ours. But we were the closest of the Light kids. Today was an important day for us. The death of the king was awful. He helped protect each and everyone’s homes in the kingdom. The family owed their lives to him. Which was why they were here today.
