I sighed. As we approached the throne room, Nye wrapped one arm around me; trying to comfort me. The king, well, we had met him. He was sweet and powerful. He cared about his kingdom more than most people. We looked into the coffin but I couldn’t stand it. I buried my face in my brother’s shirt as he comforted me. We walked away briskly, our family staying behind to speak with others about the world and it’s works. I frowned as I trotted off with my brother. Looking down at my shoes, I stumbled into someone. Her eyes were red, as if she had been crying. The boy next to her as well. They looked up at me and my jaw dropped. He looked nearly identical. From the expression on Nye’s face, she must’ve looked like me as well. We studied eachother for a minute.
“A-are you alright?” I asked, my eyebrows furrowing together. She stared at me coldly. Now I understood why my best friend called my eyes crystal. Hers were gemstones, a beautiful blue. But her expression made it obvious I shouldn’t have said anything. Or even thought a thing.
“No!” She growled. “I want to be an ordinary girl. It makes me so… so… angry!” Only then did I guess who she was. A beautiful dress, fancy hairstyle, tears. Who wouldn’t have guessed. The princess. Princess Evangelyn. Her father had died. That’s why she had cried and why she was angry.
“We could… maybe… become you?” I suggested. Evangelyn raised an eyebrow. “Like, wear your clothes and you wear ours. We live out your lives in the palace and you would live out your lives in ours. On a farm.” The princess looked at her brother, her eyes pleading with him. They discussed it quietly. In the end, they agreed. The princess handed me a mirror she had been holding.
“This is a magical mirror. My family and I use them. They help use keep in contact. Just speak my full name, Evangelyn Dark. Or Evan Dark. One of us will answer.” Evangelyn explained. I nodded and they led us to a few bathrooms to change.
As I emerged in the long, red gown, I immediately felt overdressed. As my confidence drained, I looked over at the fake me. Evangelyn looked lovely. One more thing though. I ran over to her, with a wet wash cloth in my hand and pressed it to her eyes, removing her makeup. In retaliation, she picked up some white powder and coated it onto my eyelids. Now, we could start the experiment.
